Salah says Panenka penalty lifted Egypt after win

Mohamed Salah said he chose a Panenka penalty to lift Egypt's team spirit after their win over Australia sent them into the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

The Egypt captain called the result a historic moment and said he had told his team before kick-off to enjoy the occasion and not let pressure affect their play. He added that he was happy the side had won and described Australia's defeat on penalties as unlucky.

Salah also explained the penalty technique, saying he felt he was the right player to take that risk because of his experience. He said he wanted to give his team-mates confidence and only decided on the Panenka at the last moment.
