Lionel Scaloni’s future with Argentina has become unclear, with reports saying talks over a contract extension have stalled and no final agreement is in place.
Talks lose momentum
According to reports from Gustavo Yaros, negotiations between Scaloni and the Argentine Football Association have become more complicated. His current deal runs until the end of 2026, leaving about three months to settle his future.
There had previously been an oral understanding for him to stay through the 2030 World Cup, but that has not been signed formally. The situation has shifted after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final and Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football.
AFA still wants to keep him
The AFA still wants Scaloni to stay, and some reports say senior figures remain optimistic about a new agreement. Even so, there is still no clear sign that a final deal is close.
Scaloni has led Argentina since 2018 and has won the 2022 World Cup, the 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles, and the 2022 Finalissima.
