Argentina opened Group J at the 2026 World Cup with a 3-0 win over Algeria, and Lionel Scaloni said he was pleased with the performance while warning that the job is only starting.
The holders took control early and executed their tactical plan well, according to Scaloni, who praised the team’s focus in the first match of the tournament. He said starting with a win matters, but added that there is still a long way to go.
Scaloni also singled out Lionel Messi, calling him a player who changes games with his experience, character and technical quality. Even so, he stressed that Argentina’s success came from the whole squad.
On Algeria, Scaloni described them as organised and combative, saying the scoreline made the contest look easier than it was.
Argentina now lead Group J on three points and turn to their next match against Austria, which Scaloni framed as another final. A positive result there could put the Albiceleste within sight of the knockout stage.
