Scaloni: Algeria has quality players

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has played down the idea that the World Cup opener against Algeria will define his team’s tournament.

Speaking before the match, Scaloni pointed to Argentina’s shock defeat by Saudi Arabia in Qatar in 2022 as a reminder that the first game is not always decisive, even when it matters. He described Algeria as a strong side with quick forwards, and said they deserved respect because they will make life difficult.

Scaloni also likened Algeria’s style to Morocco’s and said his squad were calm heading into the opener. He said no opponent at the tournament would be easy and called Algeria a good test.

The coach added that Julián Álvarez has recovered from an ankle issue and is available.

Lionel Messi also drew attention in the build-up. Scaloni said not only Argentina’s fans, but people around the world, want to see Messi play.

Veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi, 38, said Argentina know they are the holders and that every team will target them. He called for a well-organised back line and warned that Algeria have good players, but said Argentina must focus on their own game.
