Ahmed Shobeir has praised Spain’s performance after their 1-0 win over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final, while also accusing the match officials and FIFA of favouring the beaten side.
The prominent Egyptian broadcaster and pundit wrote on X after the final that Spain were “a great team”, singled out Rodri and Luis de la Fuente, and said the holders “taught Argentina football” despite what he described as a poor referee.
He also claimed FIFA did everything possible to help Argentina win, before adding that he was happy for the Spanish side.
Spain’s victory secured their second World Cup title.
Shobeir’s remarks continued a line of criticism from him and other figures in Egyptian football throughout the tournament. Earlier complaints centred on Argentina’s quarter-final win over Switzerland, with anger over the VAR-led dismissal of Breel Embolo. There was also anger in Egypt after officiating in the round-of-16 meeting between Egypt and Argentina.
