The left-wing Sumar coalition in Spain’s parliament has tabled a motion urging a fresh review of Morocco’s role in the 2030 World Cup, following recent incidents and tensions at the Ceuta border.
What Sumar wants
According to Spanish media reports, the proposal asks the Spanish government to send an official letter to FIFA, the Spanish FA and the Portuguese government to re-examine the joint hosting plan and reassess Morocco’s place in it.
The motion argues that a World Cup is not just a sporting event. It says hosts must commit major state investment, infrastructure development and formal guarantees, while also protecting their international standing.
Rights and compliance demands
Sumar has also asked for FIFA’s built-in mechanisms to assess host countries’ compliance with human rights standards to be activated through the Spanish FA. It wants an independent public report on the human rights situation in the host countries, to be delivered to Spain’s parliament within six months.
The coalition says any serious breach of international or human rights commitments should trigger a decision on whether cooperation with the country concerned should continue.
The move is not the first challenge to Morocco’s place in the 2030 project. Portugal’s Livre party has already written to its government and football federation asking for the issue to be reviewed again.
