A Spanish pundit has sparked debate by claiming Argentina are not playing at the same level as France or Spain after their dramatic World Cup last-16 win over Egypt.
Edu Aguirre, a well-known face on El Chiringuito, said the reaction to Lionel Scaloni’s side has been overblown. Argentina beat Egypt 3-2 to reach the quarter-finals, coming from 2-0 down in a match still being discussed for its late twist and refereeing controversy.
Aguirre argued that the world champions have clear strengths, but not enough quality in possession to be compared with Europe’s leading sides. “Argentina have an extraordinary fighting spirit and character, but from a football point of view they are not at the level to compete with Spain or France,” he said.
He also pointed to Argentina’s near-miss against Cape Verde, saying they came close to extra time in that tie as well.
The comments spread quickly on social media, where many users pointed to Argentina’s World Cup and Copa América titles, as well as their place in the last eight, while others noted Spain’s goalless draw with Cape Verde in the group stage.
