Turkey's crisis has deepened after four straight defeats in the Nations League and an early exit from the 2026 World Cup brought an end to Vincenzo Montella's tenure.
A blunt run of results
Turkey lost 1-0 to France, 4-1 to Italy, 3-0 to Belgium and then 3-1 to Italy again. The four defeats are their worst sequence in 28 years.
The World Cup campaign had already fallen apart. Turkey won once and lost twice in their three group matches, going out at the first hurdle despite fielding several players from major European clubs.
They also failed to score in their first two matches at the tournament, even though they managed 62 shots across those games.
Montella departs as the rebuild begins
The latest results have now cost Montella his job. The Turkish federation must appoint a new head coach and try to rebuild a side that arrived at the World Cup with higher expectations and left with two major setbacks in quick succession.
