Manchester United came through the fifth round of Premier League fixtures with a draw at Fulham, but the result left them on five points from five matches — matching the club’s worst start to a league season in the competition.
Late reprieve at Fulham
United had looked set for another defeat after the Manchester derby loss, but luck went their way when Cunha’s shot changed direction and brought them a point against the bottom side.
The draw means United have taken just one win this season, away to Ipswich Town, after opening with a defeat to Hull City and dropping more points against Everton. They have scored eight and conceded eight, and sit 12th heading into the international break.
Previous slow starts
The only other time United had just five points after five league games was in 2014-15 under Louis van Gaal. That side went on to finish fourth.
David Moyes also managed a stronger opening than the current one in his first season after Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, collecting seven points from fixtures against Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.
United return against Tottenham after the break, before travelling to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League.
