United's 15-year-old gem is not yet ready to be unveiled

Manchester United’s teenage forward JJ Gabriel is still waiting for a first senior competitive appearance, with club figures urging patience around the 15-year-old.

Gabriel remains a work in progress

Gabriel, who is soon to turn 16, appeared in a summer 2026 friendly and became the youngest player to feature for United in a non-competitive match. He could join the senior squad fully once he reaches that age, but the timing of a competitive debut remains unclear.

Andy Cole, the former United striker, said he was not sure Gabriel would break through this season. “He’s still very young,” Cole said. “The Premier League isn’t easy and he is still learning. He has outstanding talent and when his time comes, he’ll get his chance, but it may not happen this season.”

Sharp calls for careful handling

Lee Sharpe has also warned that United should manage the youngster carefully to protect his confidence and avoid an early injury.

Kai Rooney, son of Wayne Rooney, has also emerged as another academy name to watch, but Gabriel remains the main youth talking point at Old Trafford for now.
