The Asian Football Confederation is considering a new Nations League-style tournament for national teams, according to journalist Bader Albadie.
Modelled on UEFA
Albadie reported on Thursday that AFC leaders want to follow the example set by UEFA, which launched its Nations League eight years ago. That competition turned scattered international breaks into a formal tournament with more competitive fixtures.
The AFC plan would aim for the same effect in Asia: more meaningful matches, a higher standard of competition and added financial and branding benefits for the teams involved.
Potential boost for Iran
The proposal could also matter for Iran, whose last continental title came in 1976. A regular Asian Nations League would give Iran another route into major regional silverware and a steadier competitive framework against the continent’s top sides.
