Graham Arnold has suggested Iraq may use several defenders to deal with Erling Haaland when they face Norway in their World Cup 2026 opener in Boston on Tuesday morning.
The Iraq coach said he would not give away his full plan, but indicated that his side have tried different systems in recent friendlies to keep opponents guessing. Iraq are in West Virginia for an intensive training camp as they prepare for the start of the tournament.
Arnold said the Norway match will be a major occasion for his players, but stressed that the key battles will still come down to individual duels and mental readiness. He also pointed to Iraq’s ability to play at a high level, referencing their performance against Spain, while admitting consistency remains a challenge.
Asked specifically about Haaland, Arnold said placing five players around the striker might be one way to stop him, while calling him one of the world’s biggest stars. He added that facing such a player will be a proud moment for his squad.
Arnold said Iraq know they are not being widely backed, but believe they can produce a solid display against a Norway side he described as one of the main contenders in a difficult group.
