Beccacece: We Came to the World Cup to Write Our Own History

Sebastián Becacce says Ecuador go into their World Cup 2026 opener against Ivory Coast full of confidence and aiming to write a new chapter in the country’s football history.

The 46-year-old coach said Ecuador’s 19-match unbeaten run has been built on more than just defensive solidity, pointing instead to balance across the team and strong performances in several areas. He added that his players are ready to show what they can do on football’s biggest stage.

Becacce, taking charge at a World Cup for the first time, also spoke about the pressure that comes with the tournament and the attention of millions of supporters back home. He said that pressure is part of the job for both players and staff.

Ecuador will use 15 players at their first World Cup, but Becacce said he has no concerns about that inexperience and believes they all deserve their place. He also warned that Ivory Coast, with more than 13 players based in major European leagues, will be a difficult opponent and will require a tactical approach rather than a physical battle.

Defender Angelo Preciado echoed that view, saying Ecuador are more experienced than they were at the last World Cup and better equipped to deal with Ivory Coast’s quick transitions and effective attacks.
