World Cup Sees Eighth Coaching Resignation

Sebastián Becaccece resigned as Ecuador head coach after the side were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup by Mexico.

Mexico won 2-0 in their last-16 tie, ending Ecuador’s tournament and prompting Becaccece to announce his departure immediately afterwards.

Speaking after the match, Becaccece said football is decided by results and described the moment as a farewell to a "beautiful and wonderful family". He said the team had given everything and insisted no effort had been spared.

He added that others would judge his spell in charge, pointing to two and a half years of work built on honesty, clarity and commitment. Becaccece also said the squad had brought through several young players, produced strong results in qualifying and friendlies, and performed well in the group stage at the World Cup.

Becaccece said the first half of the project had not gone as hoped, but claimed the team had left with a united and committed squad. He thanked supporters, players and staff before leaving his post.

His exit follows a series of departures from the tournament, with six other national team coaches already stepping down, including Ronald Koeman, Steve Clarke and Sabri Lamouchi.
