Cape Verde fans marked their World Cup run with a tongue-in-cheek goat stunt before their last-16 meeting with Argentina.
Supporters took two goats into the street in shirts marked with the name “Wozinia”, a nod to the GOAT debate around Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The joke was aimed at reminding Argentina that Cape Verde have their own standout star: goalkeeper Vozinha.
The 40-year-old helped drive Cape Verde's historic progress with a string of big saves in the group stage. He was key in a goalless draw with Spain and kept a clean sheet against Saudi Arabia, while Cape Verde also drew 2-2 with Uruguay.
That was enough for Cape Verde to reach the knockout rounds for the first time. They became the smallest country in men’s World Cup history to do so, with a population of about 600,000 across 10 Atlantic islands.
Their qualification was not confirmed until the closing stages of Spain’s 1-0 win over Uruguay. Players gathered around a mobile phone in Houston to follow the finish, before celebrations began once the result went against Uruguay.
Now comes the biggest test in Cape Verde’s football history: a tie against holders Argentina and Messi, with the island nation still riding the momentum of a remarkable run.
