Thibaut Courtois has labelled Spain the leading contender to win the 2026 World Cup ahead of Belgium’s quarter-final meeting with La Roja.
Belgium reached the last eight after beating the United States, and Courtois said the side had answered recent criticism with their display against Senegal and again in the knockout win. He rejected the idea that Belgium were an easy target, saying the team had shown it still has plenty to offer.
He also praised Spain’s run through the tournament, pointing to their clean sheet record and the quality across the squad. Courtois singled out Lamine Yamal, Mikel Oyarzabal, Pedri and Rodri, while noting that Spain’s substitutes can also change games.
Belgium’s plan, he said, is to stay compact, defend well and look to punish Spain on the break.
Courtois added that Spain feels like a second home after years in La Liga. He joked that both of his children have Spanish passports and said he has always wished Spain well, except when they face Belgium.
