Luis de la Fuente said Spain’s small margin for error against a deep defensive block cost them after they failed to make their dominance count in front of goal.
The Spain head coach told reporters his side had control of the game and created chances, but lacked precision with the final pass and finish. He also paid tribute to Cape Verde, saying they defended with discipline and sacrifice, while their goalkeeper produced an excellent performance.
De la Fuente said there are no easy matches at the World Cup and noted that the tight spaces made it difficult for La Roja to turn possession into goals. Spain enjoyed clear territorial control, but Cape Verde’s organisation and their goalkeeper kept the contest scoreless.
He also addressed Lamine Yamal’s late cameo, saying the forward had recently returned from injury and the staff did not want to take any risks. Yamal came on in the second half and added quality, but could not unlock the defence.
De la Fuente said Spain were naturally disappointed to drop two points, but stressed that the tournament has only just begun.
