Deschamps: Don't judge me based on these last two matches

Didier Deschamps has said he does not want his coaching career judged on France’s last two matches after his side lost 6-4 to England in the World Cup play-off.

France trailed 4-0 by half-time before improving after the break, but England still finished the job in a frantic game. Deschamps said the disappointment of the semi-final defeat had lingered, yet urged supporters to remember the wider body of work across his time in charge.

He said he was proud of what he had given the national team and wanted to serve as an example for the next generation. Deschamps also backed France’s current crop, saying the squad has the talent and tools to stay at the top and win more titles.

The France coach added that he would leave the role and become “a silent fan”, while stressing the importance of mutual respect even when opinions differ. He ended by wishing success to his successor and to everyone involved with the national team.
