Egypt booked their place in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup after beating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Dallas.
Emam Ashour put Egypt ahead in the 13th minute, heading in after a set-piece scramble involving Karim Hafez. Australia levelled in the 55th minute when Aiden O’Neill’s delivery was turned into his own net by Egypt defender Mohamed Hany.
Neither side found a winner in normal time, despite Egypt pushing late on. Their best chance came when Mohamed Salah crossed for Rami Rabia, only for Patrick Beach to tip the header behind.
Extra time produced little. Salah had the first clear opening but sent his effort wide, and both teams kept their shape as the match drifted towards penalties. Australia sent on veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan for the shootout, replacing Beach.
Egypt held their nerve from the spot and converted four penalties to two. They will face the winner of Argentina v Cape Verde in the next round on 16 July at 19:30.
