Enzo Fernández: A champion fighting alongside his idol

Enzo Fernández has become one of Lionel Scaloni’s key players at the 2026 World Cup, helping Argentina into the final and adding another decisive moment against England.

The midfielder, who had already scored the winner against Egypt, levelled the semi-final in the 85th minute to keep Argentina alive in the match. He also finished the game with four shots and 104 touches, more than any other player on the pitch.

Fernández said he felt great after moving into central midfield and noted that he has played there many times before, including at the previous World Cup.

His link with Lionel Messi stretches back years. At 15, Fernández published a letter asking Messi to continue with Argentina after the forward had announced his international retirement. A decade on, the pair are now fighting for another world title together.

Fernández said Messi remains his model, not only for what he does on the pitch but for his personality, conduct and the way he keeps pushing himself despite everything he has achieved.
