Fifa has begun considering a 64-team World Cup for 2030, a move that would mark the biggest structural change in the tournament’s history.
Gianni Infantino said the idea is being examined, according to The Athletic. The proposal comes ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will be the first edition played with 48 teams.
The 2030 tournament is set to be staged by multiple countries to mark the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup. It is already planned as a 48-team event, but a switch to 64 would raise the number of matches again and widen the field for national teams across the world.
Supporters of the plan argue that a larger tournament would give more countries a chance to reach football’s biggest international stage. Fifa is expected to use the 2026 edition as a key test of the expanded format before deciding whether to go further for 2030.
