Diego Forlán has been named Uruguay’s head coach on a temporary basis, taking charge until March 2027, according to the country’s football federation.
Federation president Ignacio Alonso said the executive committee chose Forlán as Marcelo Bielsa’s successor, with a longer-term decision deferred until after the federation’s presidential election later this year. Uruguay do not want to lock themselves into a long-term plan before that vote.
Forlán will oversee all of Uruguay’s matches in September, October and November, plus any friendlies scheduled before March 2027. He will also combine the senior role with the Under-20 job and lead the side at the South American Under-20 Championship in January 2027.
That means he is set to take charge of the senior team in eight matches in total. Forlán previously managed Peñarol for 11 games in 2020 and Athletas San Carlos for 12 games in 2021. The former forward won two European Golden Shoes during his playing career.
