Infantino leaves door open to 64-team World Cup

Gianni Infantino has said Fifa will look at the idea of a 64-team men's World Cup after the 2026 tournament ends.

The Fifa president said he would not rule out another expansion of the finals, which are already set to be played with 48 teams for the first time in 2026. He made the comments in an interview with Swiss outlet Blue Sport.

"We have to let the whole world dream of playing in the World Cup, not just Europe and South America," Infantino said.

He described the move to 48 teams as "a great success" and said the standard of teams around the world had risen.

The 2026 format has drawn criticism because it will include eight third-placed teams reaching the last 32. A 64-team version would increase the total number of matches from 104 to 128, though each team would still play the same number of games, with only the top two in each group progressing.

The 2030 World Cup is due to be hosted by Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.
