France supports Deschamps after his mother's death

France’s players have united around Didier Deschamps after the coach returned to camp for the World Cup 2026 last-16 tie against Sweden following the death of his mother.

Adrien Rabiot, speaking before the match, said the squad were shocked when Deschamps left camp to deal with the loss and were pleased to have him back in charge.

The Milan midfielder said the group wanted to help the France boss through a difficult period and give him some distance from the grief, even briefly.

"When he told us his mother had died and he had to leave camp, it was really difficult. We were all shocked. Now we are happy he is back with us," Rabiot said.

Rabiot added that Deschamps had returned motivated to keep France moving forward at the World Cup, while trying not to let his distress affect the squad.

He said the players were fully united behind their coach and would try to repay him with good results and performances, in the hope of putting a smile back on his face.
