Has the Owner of Amazon Developed a Passion for Football?

Daily Mail wrote: As soon as reports emerged that Jeff Bezos was interested in joining a consortium to purchase a stake in Liverpool Football Club, a wave of jokes swept across social media. Some quipped that Anfield would soon be renamed "Amazon Arena," a nod to the company through which Bezos built his legendary fortune. Others joked that Liverpool's new signings would now come with "one-day delivery." Some went even further, saying that Liverpool would no longer be content with winning the Champions League but would instead be aiming to conquer the galaxy—a tongue-in-cheek reference to Bezos' role in the 21st-century space race. Regardless of one's opinion of the world's fourth-richest person, it is difficult for Liverpool supporters not to be excited by the prospect of virtually limitless resources becoming available to the club under someone whose fortune is estimated by Forbes at £190 billion. But would Liverpool really benefit from the proposed £1.35 billion investment? What exactly would Jeff Bezos' role in the deal be? And is it finally time for Reds fans to look to the future with genuine optimism and excitement? To answer these key questions, Mail Sport spoke with sources on both sides of the Atlantic to examine every aspect of the story. What is happening? Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), are in talks to sell a minority stake in the club to a consortium led by Amit Bhatia, with part of the funding coming from the family of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Jeff Bezos is also interested in becoming part of the consortium, and it is understood that several other prominent figures are keen to join the investment group as well. The takeover bid is being spearheaded by Amit Bhatia. On Tuesday, after nearly two decades at Queens Park Rangers, he stepped down from his roles as co-owner and board member of the Championship club. Bhatia was held in such high regard at QPR that one of the stands at the stadium was named after him.

The 46-year-old Bhatia is Lakshmi Mittal's son-in-law. According to Forbes, Mittal has a fortune of approximately £23.4 billion, making him the 73rd-richest person in the world. The consortium intends to acquire around £1.3 billion worth of Liverpool shares. Earlier this week, a representative of Liverpool's ownership group told Mail Sport: "An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed its interest in making a strategic investment through the acquisition of a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club." FSG executives are said to welcome the potential investment, viewing it as an opportunity to further strengthen Liverpool's position and sustain the club's long-term success. In addition to Liverpool, FSG also owns the renowned Major League Baseball team, the Boston Red Sox. If finalized, the transaction would be structurally similar to FSG's sale of a 4 percent stake to Dynasty Equity in September 2023, albeit on a much larger scale. John W. Henry, FSG's principal owner, has consistently welcomed new investors while remaining committed to retaining majority ownership and control of the club. However, sources close to FSG stress that no agreement has yet been signed and that negotiations remain in their early stages. Even so, the formation of such a consortium represents a significant development, and all indications suggest that the parties involved are eager to see the deal ultimately come to fruition.
