Hossam Hassan says Egypt have built character ahead of Friday night’s World Cup last-16 tie against Australia.
The Egypt coach said he had followed Australia closely and expects a difficult match, pointing to their organisation, pace and variety in attack. He also praised Australia’s route to the knockout stage as proof of their quality.
Hassan said Egypt’s own pedigree gives the game added weight, highlighting the country’s seven Africa Cup of Nations titles and the standard of players in his squad. He added that the group are in strong mental shape and said he has no injury concerns.
The former striker also spoke about Egypt’s make-up, saying many of his players come from the domestic league and that he would have liked to see more overseas-based players involved. Even so, he said the squad have produced a “national” Egyptian model and built a new identity through their work together.
Hassan also offered condolences to members of the travelling party who have recently lost close relatives.
