Portugal football has been left in shock after Kevin Castro died during a friendly match for Real Sport Clube.
What happened
Castro, a 25-year-old Portuguese midfielder and former West Brom player, became unwell early in the game against Estrela Amadora. Medical staff treated him on the pitch, including the use of a defibrillator, before he was taken to hospital, where his death was confirmed.
Real Sport Clube issued a statement confirming the news and said it was in “deep sadness and endless grief” over the death of their player.
Castro’s career
Castro had spent much of his short career in England, with spells at West Brom, Notts County and Chelsea’s under-23 side. He had also played in Chelsea’s youth ranks.
He had recently returned to Portugal to join Real Sport Clube, but his career and life ended suddenly at the age of 25.
