Ronald Koeman has warned that the Netherlands face a tough test against Japan in their opening World Cup group match, saying the pressure on his side is high.
The Dutch coach said his squad have quality but still need to improve in a few areas before they can be viewed as serious title contenders. He added that the staff have held several meetings with the players in recent days to go over the start of the game and the wider plan, though he declined to go into tactical detail.
Koeman said Japan have been studied closely and described them as quick, attacking and well organised, with a clear structure that can trouble any opponent. He also highlighted their physical strength, saying the game will demand full concentration from the Netherlands.
The coach said confidence in the camp is high, but his players cannot afford to take the Asian side lightly. He added that the opening match of a World Cup can shape the rest of a campaign, and that his squad are aware of the responsibility they carry.
