The ball used in Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal at the 1986 World Cup has sold at auction for more than €2.8 million.
The ball behind a famous controversy
According to L’Équipe, the ball was used in Argentina's quarter-final against England at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium. Maradona punched the ball past Peter Shilton early in the second half, and the goal stood because the referee did not spot the handball.
The same match also produced Maradona's second goal, a solo run from midfield that beat several England players and finished with a strike that is still counted among the World Cup's great goals.
Argentina won the game and later went on to lift the trophy, with Maradona central to their run to the title.
