Marcelo: I'm hoping Spain wins the World Cup for my son's sake

Marcelo has thrown his support behind Spain to win the World Cup, saying his life in the country and his family links made the choice natural.

The former Brazil international said he has lived in Spain for 20 years and that his children were all born there. Brazil’s early exit also left him without his own team in the tournament.

He added that his son is currently involved with Spain at youth level, which has strengthened his backing for Luis de la Fuente’s side.

Marcelo was speaking in comments reported from Spain, where he has spent much of his career and now regards as home. His remarks reflect a personal connection to La Roja rather than any change in national allegiance.

His eldest son, Enzo Alves, is a forward in Real Madrid’s academy and has accepted a call from the Spanish federation to represent Spain in the age-group ranks.
