Roberto Martínez has framed Portugal’s next game against Croatia as the start of their “second World Cup” and says his side must begin it with a win.
Speaking in Toronto, the Portugal coach said the group stage was useful preparation for the knockout rounds, even if there are still details to improve. He added that all 21 players have now featured, and that squad management meant Bernardo Silva was rested against Colombia to avoid the risk of suspension.
Martínez described Croatia as a team Portugal know well and made clear there are no easy points on offer at a World Cup. He said his side have adapted to the conditions, including the heat and travel, and are ready for a difficult contest.
The coach also stressed self-criticism and unity inside the squad. “We must start the second World Cup well,” he said, adding that the dressing room is ready and united as Portugal look to keep their tournament alive.
