Kylian Mbappé has drawn level with Lionel Messi on eight goals at the 2026 World Cup after scoring in France's quarter-final win over Morocco.
The 27-year-old opened the scoring on Thursday night before France sealed a 2-0 victory and a place in the semi-finals. Messi had already reached eight in Argentina's run, and the two now sit together at the top of the tournament scoring chart.
It is the first time in World Cup history that two players have reached eight goals in the same edition. In previous tournaments, eight goals was enough to win or share the Golden Boot, but both men are still alive in the competition and can add to their tally.
Mbappé's strike also strengthened his position as the all-time leading scorer in the knockout stages of the World Cup. It took him to 20 goals in the finals overall, leaving him one behind Messi's record of 21.
Messi can move further ahead when Argentina face Switzerland, while Mbappé has a chance to respond in France's next match.
