Japan drew 2-2 with the Netherlands in their opening World Cup 2026 match, taking a point after twice falling behind against the European side.
Hajime Moriyasu said he was proud of his players after the game, describing their display as one that showed “character, tactical discipline and fighting spirit”. He added that Japan knew they would be under pressure at times because of the Netherlands’ individual quality, but said his team “never gave up”.
Moriyasu also pointed to Japan’s late equaliser as proof of the mentality required at a major tournament. “We believed in our ability until the final second,” he said.
The result leaves Japan with a valuable point in Group F and keeps their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive. Their next match is against Tunisia, in a game that could prove important in the race to qualify.
Moriyasu said the team still has a long way to go and stressed the need to keep the same focus and motivation for the rest of the campaign.
