Manuel Neuer made history against Curaçao by becoming only the second goalkeeper, and only the second German player, to feature at five World Cups.
At 40 years and 79 days old, the Bayern Munich captain also became Germany’s oldest player ever at a World Cup or European Championship. He passed Lothar Matthäus, who was 39 years and 91 days old at Euro 2000.
Neuer’s appearance was his 125th for Germany. He won the World Cup in 2014 and captained the national team from 2016 until the 2024 European Championship.
He had announced his international retirement after Euro 2024, but later reversed that decision.
The match also took Neuer to 20 World Cup appearances, level with France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, and gave him the outright record for the most World Cup appearances by a goalkeeper.
