Jordan Pickford has become England’s record holder for World Cup appearances, moving clear of Peter Shilton with his 18th tournament game against Norway.
The Everton goalkeeper has long divided opinion in England, with his risk-heavy style and body language often drawing criticism. He was again faulted after Norway scored, but Thomas Tuchel kept faith with him.
Pickford’s World Cup record now stands at six clean sheets and 32 saves from 18 matches. Only Shilton, with 10 clean sheets and 54 saves, sits above him in those categories.
Since his international debut in 2017, Pickford has played 89 times for England, kept 44 clean sheets and conceded 59 goals. He has also made just six errors leading to shots and two that ended in goals.
He has never played for a European heavyweight at club level, and has spent most of his career at Everton after leaving Sunderland. Even so, he is now England’s second-most capped goalkeeper, behind only Shilton, and remains first choice as the next knockout test approaches.
