Pogba calls current France squad strongest since 2006

Paul Pogba has described France’s current group as their strongest for almost two decades, while warning that talent alone will not win the 2026 World Cup.

The 33-year-old Monaco midfielder, who played a key role in France’s 2018 triumph, told L’Équipe that Didier Deschamps’ squad has the quality to challenge for another title. He said he believes this may be France’s best side since 2006 and even suggested it could be stronger on an individual level than the teams that reached the latter stages in 2018 and 2022.

Pogba pointed to the depth of talent in the squad and France’s status as one of the leading nations in world football. He also referenced the fact that the current Ballon d’Or winner is French as evidence of the level available to Deschamps.

Still, Pogba stressed that major tournaments demand more than star names. He said cohesion, concentration and good management will decide the outcome. He also named Portugal, Spain and Brazil among France’s main rivals for the 2026 tournament.
