Portugal open disciplinary case against Cristiano Ronaldo

Portugal’s football federation has opened disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo after he left the national team camp without permission, according to foreign reports on Friday, 9 October 2026.

What happened in Copenhagen

The move followed a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus and came before Portugal’s Nations League match against Denmark in Copenhagen. European reports said the federation’s disciplinary committee is now deciding the final punishment, which could range from one to six matches, although no formal decision has been announced.

Ronaldo said Jesus had not kept his promises. He said he had expected to play against Norway, but was not sent on despite warming up in the second half. He also said there had been an agreement to explain the situation at a press conference, but that this did not happen.

In a statement, the Portugal captain apologised to his team-mates for leaving camp and said he accepted responsibility for his actions. He also said he remained ready to return to the national team after serving any suspension.
