Asian champions ready to face Switzerland

Qatar and Switzerland meet in their first Group B match at the 2026 World Cup, a game that could shape both teams’ route through the section.

Qatar return to the tournament after finishing bottom of their group at the 2022 World Cup, when they lost all three matches as hosts. This time, Julen Lopetegui’s side arrive on the back of renewed success in Asia, including another Asian Cup title and a strong qualifying run, and they will look to show a very different side on the biggest stage.

For Qatar, the opening match offers a chance to put the disappointment of 2022 behind them and back up the progress they have made in recent years. A positive result against one of Europe’s more consistent sides would add weight to the idea that their recent rise is no fluke.

Switzerland, coached by Murat Yakin, come into the contest with confidence. Their recent form has been solid, and their blend of experienced senior players and emerging attacking talent has led many to view them as strong contenders for top spot in the group.

The match is also a meeting of contrasting styles, with both teams treating it as an early test of their World Cup ambitions.
