Real Madrid have asked UEFA to examine Barcelona’s titles from the years covered by the Negreira case if wrongdoing is proved, according to AS. The request is part of the wider investigation into payments made by Barcelona to companies linked to José María Enríquez Negreira, the former vice-president of Spain’s referees committee.
What Madrid have asked for
AS reported that Madrid have sent a large batch of documents to UEFA and want the governing body to look at the trophies Barcelona won during the period under scrutiny. UEFA has confirmed receipt of the material and said its ethics and disciplinary inspectors will assess it as part of the case.
Barcelona have said the payments, made between 2001 and 2018 and reported to total more than €7 million, were for technical reports and refereeing advice. They deny any attempt to influence match results.
The case is still open
AS said the request does not mean any trophy has been taken away. UEFA is still gathering documents and explanations from the parties involved, and any punishment would need a formal disciplinary process.
Earlier, Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso declined to say whether specific titles should be removed before the facts are established.
