Cristiano Ronaldo explained his pointed post-match celebration after scoring twice in Portugal's 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, saying he wanted people to "not forget" him.
The 41-year-old went straight to a camera at full-time and shouted "I'm back" in English, a line that quickly became a talking point in Portugal and beyond. The choice of language appeared designed to make sure the message landed worldwide.
Ronaldo's brace also took him into the record books. He became the first player to score at six different World Cups and moved on to 10 World Cup goals for Portugal, passing Eusébio as the country's leading scorer in the competition.
Speaking to Sport TV Portugal pitchside, Ronaldo said the celebration was a response to criticism after Portugal's opening match against Congo. Asked whether it was his best answer to those doubts, he replied: "Absolutely!"
He also played down the significance of individual milestones, stressing that team progress mattered more. Portugal have four points and Ronaldo said the main target was to reach the knockout stage.
