Saka: I would have liked to play more

England finished third at the 2026 World Cup after a 6-4 win over France, with Bukayo Saka scoring a hat-trick in a frantic match.

The Three Lions led 4-0 at half-time before Kylian Mbappé dragged France back into the contest. Mbappé scored twice to take his World Cup tally to 10 and move on to 22 goals in the tournament overall, overtaking Lionel Messi. He also went top in the race for the Golden Boot.

Michael Olise created both of France’s goals and finished the tournament with seven assists, breaking Pelé’s long-standing record for the most assists in a single World Cup, set in 1970.

Saka converted a late penalty to complete his treble, while Jude Bellingham added England’s sixth. The result gave England their best World Cup finish since winning the tournament in 1966.

After the game, Saka called it a “crazy and strange” match and said England had wanted to end the tournament on a high after missing out on the final. He also said Bellingham had told him to take the penalty and finish the hat-trick.
