Saudi Arabia head coach Giorgios Donis praised his players after they held Uruguay to a 1-1 draw in their opening Group H match at the 2026 World Cup.
Donis said his team played with “character and courage” against one of the group’s stronger sides and argued that the result showed Saudi Arabia can compete with any opponent. He had already set an attacking tone before kick-off, and was pleased with the way his side stuck to the plan.
“We were disciplined for many parts of the match and tactically we did well,” Donis said. “Getting a point against Uruguay was down to the players’ effort and team organisation.”
He added that the campaign is only just beginning and insisted Saudi Arabia must keep their focus for the matches ahead. Their draw left alive hopes of progress from Group H, with Donis saying his side will keep fighting for qualification until the end.
