Arsène Wenger is being considered as a potential challenger to Gianni Infantino in the upcoming FIFA presidential election. The former Arsenal manager is still weighing whether to stand.
Wenger weighs his options
According to L'Équipe, final talks aimed at persuading Wenger are expected to continue before a decision is announced by the middle of next week. The 77-year-old, now FIFA's global football development chief, has not yet made a final call.
His profile is seen as an asset by opponents of Infantino. L'Équipe says Wenger's international reputation and long experience in the game give him support in Africa and Asia, while his lack of ties to UEFA could also appeal to several federations.
Other names in the race
There are also figures inside FIFA who are said to be pushing for Wenger's candidacy.
If he does enter the contest, Wenger would be limited to one four-year term because of his age. Kozo Tashima, honorary president of the Japan Football Association, has already said he will challenge Infantino.
