FIFA will change its anthem routine at the World Cup on Thursday, with all 26 players from each team standing on the pitch for the national anthems before Mexico face South Africa.
Gianni Infantino confirmed the move at the tournament’s opening press conference and said the idea came from former Italy forward Alessandro Del Piero. Infantino said Del Piero raised the suggestion a few months ago, arguing that the full squad should share the moment rather than only the starting XI.
The new format will be used for the first time in the competition on Thursday night. Alongside the players, a giant flag will be displayed as part of the ceremony.
Infantino said FIFA saw the proposal as part of its push for innovation. The change replaces the traditional pre-match setup, where only the 11 starters usually line up for the anthem.
