Lamine Yamal says Spain will win the 2026 World Cup and has brushed off criticism of their group-stage displays ahead of the last-16 tie against Austria.
Speaking to Cadena COPE, the Barcelona forward said he is ready to play the full 90 minutes after easing fears over his fitness. He also pointed to Spain’s mentality, saying the key is to win rather than simply play well.
Yamal said Spain know they can do better and that the team should improve as the tournament goes on. He added that the players are in good physical condition and want to take things step by step, with the most important part of the competition now beginning.
The 17-year-old also said he only reads criticism after a good performance, and claimed he can handle the pressure because he is able to change a match. Earlier in the interview, he named Vinicius Junior and Ismail Saibari as the players who have caught his eye most at the tournament.
He ended with a joke about Marc Cucurella and a possible move to Real Madrid, saying he would be in the starting line-up on day one but not for long.
