NEC Nijmegen vs Fortuna Sittard 2-2

Fortuna Sittard left Nijmegen with a point after Anthony Descotte scored twice, but NEC Nijmegen came back from 2-1 down to level it in stoppage time. Willum Thor Willumsson, who had come on in the 84th minute, scored the late equaliser after a VAR check and a missed penalty had already set up the finish.

Fortuna went ahead in the 18th minute when Descotte finished from Rodrigo Guth, before Kevin Kers equalised for NEC on 28 minutes from Dennis Geiger. The sides were level at 1-1 at half-time.

Descotte restored Fortuna’s lead on 48 minutes with his second of the match, assisted by Shiloh 't Zand, and the visitors then protected that advantage through a run of changes and a compact shape. NEC made three changes on 63 minutes, then two more on 84 minutes, and stayed in the game before VAR confirmed a penalty for Kaj Sierhuis on 88 minutes. Mitchel Bakker missed it on 90 minutes, but Willumsson equalised three minutes into stoppage time from Perr Schuurs, who had also come on in the 84th minute.

The numbers pointed heavily towards NEC: they had 74% of the ball, 608 passes to Fortuna’s 222, 22 shots to 5, 7 on target to 3 and 2.53 expected goals to 0.45. They also won 13 corners to none and had five saves to Fortuna’s one, but the visitors still took something from a match they spent long spells without the ball.

Fortuna collected two yellow cards, for Shiloh 't Zand on 38 minutes and Rodrigo Guth on 54 minutes. NEC were not booked.
