Bernardo Silva has spoken publicly for the first time since Portugal’s World Cup exit, saying the tournament ended in deep disappointment and arrived far earlier than expected.
The 31-year-old wrote on social media that it was “a disappointing World Cup and a great disappointment” and thanked Portugal supporters for their backing and belief. He also said representing the national team would always remain a major honour.
Silva’s message came a week after Portugal were knocked out. The former Manchester City midfielder was an important part of Roberto Martínez’s squad, even if he was not an automatic starter.
He played in five of Portugal’s six matches and missed only the final group game against Colombia. Against Spain at the AT&T Stadium, he was given just seven minutes, coming on as a substitute for Vitinha. For Silva, it was another lost chance to win the World Cup, one of the few major honours missing from his career.
