The Bundesliga has set a new scoring record after five matchweeks, with 172 goals in total. Freiburg moved top after beating Schalke, while Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich both dropped points at the weekend.
Record pace in Germany
The league’s previous best for the opening five rounds was 170 goals, set in 1984-85. This season’s average of 3.8 goals per game is the highest ever at this stage of the competition.
Only three teams have stayed unbeaten so far: Freiburg, Bayern Munich and Dortmund. Bayern lead the scoring chart with 16 goals, while bottom club Borussia Mönchengladbach have conceded the most, with 18.
Week five delivered 35 more goals
Matchweek five produced 35 goals, with Leipzig’s 6-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt the biggest result. The highest-scoring game came in Mainz, where Bayer Leverkusen won 4-3 away.
There have been only three goalless draws in this Bundesliga season, with 93% of matches seeing at least one goal. By contrast, only 4% of matches had finished 0-0 by this point last season.
Bayern are averaging 3.2 goals per game this term. The source also notes that in 1984-85, Udo Lattek’s title-winning Bayern side averaged 2.3 goals per match, while Werder Bremen finished with the best attack that season and scored 87 times in 34 rounds.
