England head into their World Cup quarter-final against Norway at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami with a record that points to repeated trouble at this stage.
The Three Lions have reached the last eight 10 times and lost seven of those matches, a 70% defeat rate that is among the worst returns for any leading contender. Their quarter-final wins came against Argentina in 1966, Cameroon in 1990 and Sweden in 2018.
History has also seen England beaten in the last eight by Germany in 1970, Portugal in 2006 and France in 2022. Brazil have knocked them out twice, in 1962 and 2002, while Paraguay did so in 1954 and Argentina in 1986.
The 2006 meeting with Portugal remains one of the most talked-about of those defeats, with England losing on penalties after Wayne Rooney was sent off.
Now Gareth Southgate's side must try to get past Norway and Erling Haaland, as England seek a fourth quarter-final win that would move them closer to a second world title.
