Manuel Neuer has said retirement in 2027 looks likely, while stopping short of making a final decision on when to hang up his gloves.
Urbig backed as successor
The Bayern Munich goalkeeper also praised Jonas Urbig, describing the 23-year-old as someone who can be trusted across all competitions. Neuer said Urbig has shown that in the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League, and added that he feels very positive about him.
Neuer believes Urbig can go on to become Germany’s first-choice keeper in time. The pair are set to work closely again next season, with Neuer expected to help prepare him for a bigger role at club level.
Focus on Germany and the future
Neuer returned to the Germany squad for the 2026 World Cup, where they exited in the last 16 after a defeat by Paraguay. Urbig was also involved in the wider set-up but was the fourth goalkeeper and not named in the official squad.
Neuer said the loss was hard to process, but added that he was glad he had not ended his career before it. He also confirmed that his international career is over and said he does not plan to become a coach, though he wants to stay involved in football.
The Bayern captain also praised Jürgen Klopp, saying he hopes he can help move German football forward.
